Baptist Groups Call on Indian Government to Halt Anti-Christian Violence
In a fervent appeal, Baptist conventions, councils, and associations representing thousands of churches have urged Indian President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take decisive action against violent mobs targeting Christians and other religious minorities.
The call to action, supported by over 400 Christian leaders and 30 church groups, highlights the urgent need for the government to investigate and address these incidents impartially.
The appeal, sent in late December, emphasizes the alarming rise in hate speech and violence against Christians, often incited by elected officials. Reports from the Evangelical Fellowship of India and the United Christian Forum indicate over 720 incidents targeting Christians in 2023 alone. The letter also points to the misuse of anti-conversion laws, leading to the unjust arrest and harassment of more than 110 ministers.
The ongoing crisis in Manipur, where over 250 people have been killed and 350 churches destroyed since May 2023, underscores the severity of the situation. The Baptist groups’ appeal calls for healing and reconciliation in the region, as well as the protection of religious freedoms and constitutional rights for all citizens.
This urgent plea from Baptist groups and Christian leaders highlights the need for immediate government intervention to ensure the safety and rights of religious minorities in India.
