Biden Awards Pope Francis Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Joe Biden has awarded Pope Francis the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction, the highest civilian honour in the United States. The announcement was made during a phone call between the two leaders on January 11, 2025. This marks the first time Biden has bestowed this honour with distinction during his presidency.

Initially, Biden had planned to travel to Rome to present the award in person, but the trip was cancelled due to the ongoing wildfires in California. Despite the change in plans, the honour was conveyed with heartfelt admiration. Biden praised Pope Francis for his humility, grace, and unwavering commitment to serving the poor and promoting peace.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal endeavors. Pope Francis, known as the “People’s Pope,” has been recognized for his dedication to faith, hope, and love that shines brightly across the world.

This award highlights the deep respect and admiration that President Biden, the second Catholic president in U.S. history, holds for Pope Francis and his mission of compassion and inclusivity.
