Ipswich Church to be Designated as a Minster
The Church of St. Mary-le-Tower in Ipswich is set to be redesignated as Ipswich Minster on January 19, 2025. This historic event coincides with the 825th anniversary of Ipswich being granted its Royal Charter by King John.
The decision to elevate St. Mary-le-Tower to the status of a minister recognizes its longstanding importance to the town and its vital role in serving the spiritual and community needs of Ipswich. The church, which has been a central part of Ipswich for over a thousand years, will now hold an even more prominent position within the community.
Reverend Tom Mumford, the church’s vicar, expressed his excitement about the upcoming events and the significance of this designation. “Becoming Ipswich Minster is a real honour and something the whole of Ipswich can be rightly proud of. For me, though, this is not about status, but service. It is about renewing our vocation to serve the town and its people,” he said.
To mark this momentous occasion, a series of events were planned leading up to the official ceremony. On January 17, an evening of storytelling and music will took place, guiding visitors through the rich history of Ipswich and the church. The following day, January 18, the church hosted an open day with various workshops, including children’s singing and bell-ringing workshops.
The official redesignation ceremony will be led by the Bishop of St. Edmundsbury and Ipswich, who will confer the minister status on St. Mary-le-Tower. This event is expected to draw significant attention from the local community and beyond, celebrating the church’s enhanced role and its commitment to serving the people of Ipswich.
The transformation of St. Mary-le-Tower into Ipswich Minster is a rare and historic honour, reflecting the church’s dedication to its mission and its importance to the town’s heritage. As the community prepares for this historic event, there is a palpable sense of pride and anticipation for the future of Ipswich Minster.
