Mercedes-Benz Gifts Pope Francis a Newly Modified G-Wagon

Mercedes-Benz has presented Pope Francis with a newly modified G-Wagon, now serving as the latest ‘popemobile’. The handover took place on December 4, 2024, at the Vatican, where the CEO of Mercedes-Benz, Ola Källenius, personally delivered the keys to the pontiff.

This new popemobile is a fully electric vehicle, marking a historic first for the Vatican. The G-Wagon, known as the EQG, has been customized to meet the specific needs of Pope Francis. It features a rotating heated seat and a heated handrail, ensuring the Pope’s comfort during his public appearances. The vehicle is also equipped with a retractable roof to protect him from the elements.

The new popemobile is not only a symbol of luxury but also of sustainability. Mercedes-Benz has been a long-time supplier of vehicles to the Vatican, and this latest addition aligns with the Pope’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The electric G-Wagon is part of the Vatican’s broader initiative to transition to zero-emission vehicles by 2030.

Pope Francis expressed his gratitude for the new vehicle, highlighting its significance in promoting sustainable practices. The popemobile’s design includes the Pope’s coat of arms and the license plate SCV 1, which stands for Vatican City State.

This new popemobile will be used during the Pope’s public appearances, including the upcoming Jubilee Year celebrations in 2025, where millions of pilgrims are expected to visit Rome. The vehicle’s advanced features and eco-friendly design make it a fitting choice for the Pope’s mission of advocating for a greener planet.
